WHY DO YOUR FEET GET WIDER OVER TIMER AND WHAT DOES THAT HAVE DO WITH AGE?

Warum Füße weiter werden und was das mit dem Alter zu tun hat?

Feet basically change throughout their lives. This is a completely natural process. Have you noticed that newborns and babies have feet that are relatively misshapen and resemble a potato? It is only when they learn to walk upright that the arch of the foot is stretched out via the tendons and muscles, similar to an umbrella. The 90-degree bent foot with longitudinal and transverse arch is only necessary when the human being has learned to walk. Nature has designed it in such a way that the feet then have quite stable length and width dimensions for decades and only change in old age.

The well-trained foot musculature is actually a guarantee for the relatively high stability of the complex foot apparatus. Actually, because unfortunately man is working mightily against nature. Our two biggest diseases of civilisation are too little exercise and being overweight. In addition, people in western civilisation wear anatomically disadvantageous shoes for fashion reasons (or out of bad habits). We have talked in detail about the disadvantages of high heels in this blog. Admittedly, no other shoe adds so much eros to a woman’s leg. But no other shoe also manages to cause so much discomfort and consequential effects. Due to the diseases of civilisation and bad footwear, many feet deform into splay or flat feet. This means that the feet become wider. This is not intended by nature. What is unavoidable is that the arch of the foot lowers somewhat in the second half of life. The foot becomes wider. But don’t worry: whatever width you need, we at Sioux have suitable, healthy and fashionably attractive footwear for you.

By the way, there is another reason why feet can become wider. We don’t want to hide it. It is a rather rare one. We spoke above about the principle of paraceslsus, dosis facit venenum, the dose makes the poison. We now know: a lot of running (some say too much running) also leads to wider feet. The experienced modellers at Sioux had already heard about this, but we have been particularly affected by it. If someone had asked us a year ago whether you can get wide feet from a lot of running, we wouldn’t have been sure what to say. Now we know. Our managing director has been preparing for the Berlin Marathon and has therefore increased his monthly running workload to 80-100 km. We immediately saw this as an opportunity and our most experienced modeller misses the boss’s feet every month. And lo and behold, the width of the feet has changed from a width G to a width H through a lot of running on the tarmac and that within a few months. This was not mentioned in any textbook and seems to be a rare case (which was also confirmed by orthopaedists). So what we only knew from hearsay, we were now able to study for ourselves in the house: We can therefore say that not only too little movement regularly leads to malpositions, but also (in exceptional cases) too much. But we don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater: For the average person, the following advice applies without reservation: move as much as possible, your body will thank you for it. If you want to jog more than 100 km a month, please contact us again. We don’t make running shoes, but some of the laws apply universally, no matter what kind of shoe you want to buy.
