Hallux valgus – what is that?

Hallux valgus – frostbite or bunion – is the most common foot malposition in women. In this foot malpositioning, the big toe in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the toe bends visibly towards the outside of the foot, while the tip of the toe turns towards the inside of the foot. As a result, the second toe is unnaturally displaced or overlapped by the big toe (so-called valgus position), the ball of the foot appears enlarged and becomes prominently visible to the outside.  Almost 50% of all women are affected by hallux valgus. A malpositioning of this kind often leads to pain in combination with incorrect footwear. In this case it is therefore absolutely necessary to wear special Hallux valgus shoes which are extra comfortable and prevent pain.

Hallux valgus – What are the causes and triggers?

The causes of a bunion (big) toe can be many and varied. Often there is a genetic predisposition or weak connective tissue that promotes its development. Hallux valgus is triggered by poor posture or malpositioning. Causes are often shoes that are too tight or too pointed, usually in combination with high heels (due to wearing too many pumps or high heels) High heels shift the weight of the wearer from the heel area (as it would naturally be distributed in the barefoot gait) to the forefoot area. Hallux valgus is usually a long-term consequence of the evasive movements of dynamic forces which cannot be converted into a natural rolling movement in the forefoot due to shoes that are too tight or too pointed. Unfortunately, the bunion is a particular complaint of women, while men are affected by hallux valgus much less frequently and only in much milder forms.

Which shoes are suitable for Hallux Valgus? What shoes should I wear for particularly sensitive feet?

If you have feet with Hallux Valgus, there are four things you should pay attention to when buying shoes:

1. perfect fit – the Hallux Valgus shoe must fit perfectly, not only when standing but along the entire rolling movement. The heel should be held tight and tight so that at the same time the forefoot area has enough room for your big toe and of course all other toes. Under no circumstances should the shoe be too small or too narrow, so you avoid pressure points and further malpositioning into which your feet are forced. Especially the fit of the shoe on your big toe needs special attention.

2. extra soft and flexible materials – The shoe must have extra soft and elastic materials in the upper and lining. Ideal here are embroidery fabrics, stretch leather, fine deerskin and soft calf nappa. In short: The shoe must be fabulously comfortable. The material around your big toe must be particularly flexible, and you should check this haptically. If you can stretch the shoe with your finger from the inside in front so that this is visible on the outside, then the ladies‘ shoe is just right.

3. as few seams as possible in the forefoot area – Hallux Valgus shoes should not have any seams, liners or appliqués, especially in the area of the ball of the foot. If seams are unavoidable for optical or technical reasons, they must be soft and flexible and sewn with stretch threads.  Before putting on the shoe, you should feel it from the inside at the place of your big toe. If you feel a seam there and it does not give way, the shoe is not suitable.

4. zero heels- Lowest possible heels (so-called neutral blast), because the flatter the foot stands in a shoe, the more natural the load distribution and the rolling dynamics. In this respect, especially women with sensitive feet should wear as few heels as possible in order to relieve their weak point, the ball of the foot, as much as possible. This means quite clearly: Do without pumps, high heels and stilettos – your feet will thank you for it.
